Radio Serial

The VP Radio Science Serial program is a tripartite collaborative program of Vigyan Prasar (VP), All India Radio (AIR) and the Regional Language Agencies (RLA), broadcast across the length and breadth of the country in regional languages through AIR. The prime topic is based on current socio-scientific scenario, conceived through various meetings between VP, AIR Program Executive and the RLA. Once the topic is selected, VP chalks out the episode numbers and entrust various experts to develop the content. Once developed, VP posts them on the website.

Objectives

Objectives
  • To promote and propagate scientific and rational outlook.
  • To act as a resource-cum-facility program for S&T communication.
  • To take up large-scale science popularization activities through radio.
  • To develop and disseminate a variety of S&T popularization programs in different Indian languages.
  • Using different media (radio) for S&T Communication which has high affordability as well as large coverage than television.
  • To acquaint listeners with the new/emerging technologies for S&T Communication.
  • Timings of broadcast

Generally thrust is given to broadcast a particular serial at the same time in all the States. But given the diversity of this country, geographical locations of various States, constraints of AIR timing schedules and other difficulties, maintaining a common time schedule sometimes seem impossible. In that case the respective AIR stations choose a time of convenience.

For the last serial on Disaster Management, ‘Asuk Durjog Prostut Amra’ in Bengali, the broadcast timing was 8 am on Kolkata prime channel for half an hour.

The program started in 2008 with a 52 episode serial on Planet Earth, titled ‘Dharti Meri Dharti’(Hindi). Since then 10 different topics have been covered and the eleventh one is currently under development. The task attended so far:

    Format of the AIR serials

Regarding the format, VP gives considerable space to the regional AIR stations and RLAs to choose the format they like. This is adopted keeping in mind of flamboyant diversity of Indian culture, limitations of various AIR stations and variety of regional flavour. Generally, the most practiced formats are docudrama, interviews and panel discussions. In West Bengal, drama and docudrama are in vogue.

    Characteristics of the episode contents

Keeping in tune with the prime objective of the program, all the episode contents are represented in a lucid manner so that the delicate scientific content bears a rational relationship with the easy understanding of the matter. In Bengali, the respective topics are developed by expert script writers in such a manner that it becomes enjoyable and digestible to all tiers of the people. These fabulous scripts are then dramatically acted upon by the AIR drama personnel in Akashvani studio resulting in the overwhelmingly ornate dramatized formats, lovable to audiences

    Serials to commemorate International Years

Often serials are aired to commemorate various international years thereby disseminating the primary message of the respective years to millions of audiences nationwide. Like in 2008 the serial ‘Dharti Meri Dharti (Hindi)’ was developed to commemorate the International Year of Planet Earth. The serial covered all the domains of earth sciences, spanning nebular origin, geology, hydrology, atmospheric sciences, biodiversity and Indian geomorphology in a 52 episode packet airing year-long a holistic view of the Planet Earth. Likewise, in 2009, Astronomy was selected for a 54 episode serial commemorating the International Year of Astronomy. The serial encompassed all the domains of astronomy, including history of astronomy, Indian astronomy, telescopes, solar system, stellar systems, interstellar medium and cosmology thereby picturing a holistic view of the cosmos to the million audiences. Colours of Chemistry commemorated the International Year of Chemistry, while ‘Paramanu Se Sitaro Tak’ commemorated the Hundredth year of Niels Bohr’s postulates of atomic model of hydrogen.

Role of SCF as a RLA

SCF acts as a RLA for scripts in Bengali and since 2008, has successfully developed 262 episodes that already went into air. SCF is currently engaged in the development of another 52 episode serial on Sustainable Development. Though at the very onset, the role was limited to translating of already prepared scripts into Bengali, but later it began to be developed into new scripts based on the given topic. To achieve this, SCF has created a pool of scripts writers whose untiring and dedicated efforts give each and every script a unique taste of its own. Moreover, SCF, as a RLA, believes young and new science communicators should be and can be developed into good script writers of science based episodes. The search goes on in spite of teething trouble.
