The year 2017 is the 25th Year

The year 2017 is the 25th Year of a nationwide exercise for carrying out small research activities by child scientists of specific age. The exercise was first initiated at Madhya Pradesh by Gwalior Science Center in 1991-92, later adopted by the National Council for Science and Technology (NCSTC), Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India for carrying out national level activities. To install, to sustain and to expand a nationwide science initiative for long twenty-five years for the children is not a small achievement of NCSTC-DST, GoI. During these twenty-five years the national level science congress for the children has been held at Delhi (1993 & 1994), Guwahati (1995 & 2004), Hyderabad (1996), Bhopal (1997 & 2013), Chennai (1998 & 2010), Goa (1999), Kolkata (2000), Pune (2001), Mysore (2012), Lucknow (2003), Bhubaneswar (2005), Gangtok (2006), Baramati (2007 & 2016), Dimapur (2008), Ahmedabad (2009), Jaipur (2011), Baranasi (2012), Bengaluru (2014) and Chandigarh (2015). The venue for NCSC, 2017 is yet to be decided and declared.

NCSTC-DST, GoI has nominated total 38 State Coordinating Agencies, one each for 36 States and Union Territories and one each for the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, with the responsibility of implementing NCSC at the respective State and the district level of the State.
The NCSC is organized on a three tier format.

  • Tier 01. The District Level Congress is the first tier. At the District Congress projects presented by child scientists are evaluated and screened by the district level evaluators for State Level Congress, the second tier of the NCSC.
  • Tier 02. The projects evaluated and screened at the District Congress go through another process of evaluation and screening at the State Level Congress, the second tier of the format, where the selected projects qualify for presentation at the NCSC, the national level, as per Statewise quota. The Quota for West Bengal is 30 (thirty) child scientists.
  • Tier 03. National Level, the third tier is organized by the NCSTC-DST, GoI where total 658 (six hundred fifty eight) child scientists present their projects. In addition, child scientists from ASEAN countries, UAE and SAARC countries are also invited to present their projects.

  • Science Communicators’ Forum, Kolkata has remained closely associated with this nationwide programme for twenty-four years since its inception in 1993 and shall act as the State Coordinating Agency for West Bengal in 2017 also.

    Current status & ongoing activities at a glance

    Dr. Bansari Guha, Asstt. Secretary/SCF and a Faculty of Sivanath Sastri College, Kolkata has been nominated as the State Coordinator for NCSC 2017, West Bengal and Sri Dipen Roy, Asstt. Secretary/SCF and the Head Master of Government Model School, Gopiballavpur, Jhargram, has been nominated as the State Academic Coordinator for NCSC, 2017, West Bengal.

    The State Level NCSC 2017 was held successfully on 23 & 24 September, 2017. Total 249 Projects were presented. The names of 30 (thirty) child scientists selected for presentation of Projects at the National Level CSC, 2017 have also been published.

    SCF is grateful to all Heads of institutions, to the District Coordinating Agencies, for their association with NCSC, 2017. SCF expects continued support from all of them, not only for NCSCs, but also for all other science education and popularization initiatives like National Teachers’ Science Congress (NTSC), Activity Based Learning Enhancement Programme (ABLEP), Vacation Camps for Creative Learning (VCCL) and other such initiatives taken by SCF.,

    Shri Raghu Menon, Chair, National Academic Committee (NAC), National Children’s Science Congress (NCSC), 2017 in his mail dated 06 October, 2017 informs that the NCSC is going to happen in the Science City, Ahmedabad, Gujarat from 27 to 31 December, 2017. The Gujarat State Council for Science & Technology, Ahmedabad, Gujarat shall be the Host of this national level programme

    • The State level Resource Teachers’ Orientation Workshop, was conducted at Seva Kendra, 52B, Radhanath Chowdhury Road, Kolkata 700015, on 06 and 07 March, 2017.
      The District Level Orientation Workshops of Resource Persons have been successfully completed by the respective districts.
      Currently the Pre-District Orientation of child scientists is in progress in the districts.

    Cooperation from the State Education Department, Govt of West Bengal.

    • Order has been issued by the School Education Department, Govt of West Bengal stating that those in-service teachers who shall participate in workshops and duties related to NCSC, 2017 may be sanctioned On Duty Leave for those days, subject to certification by SCF.
    • Order to all the district level Inspectorates of the Education Department has also been issued by the School Education Department, Govt. of West Bengal requesting them to involve 100 schools of each District in NCSC 2017
