Activity Based Learning Enhancement Program (ABLEP)

A teacher is the supreme player in the class-room situation, when informational teaching based on rote learning is imparted chiefly through ‘chalk and talk’ method and where the students are passive listeners. The teacher can reach only about 5-10% listeners of the class. Consequentially this vertical handed down approach is at the root of misunderstanding or misconception of any subject. The students suffer. Their interest in construction of knowledge through learning is at the lowest possible ebb.

Teachers’ responsibility always remains to activate children’s mindset through interesting methods and to ignite an enquiring mind within them. It is always seen that children can grasp any subject easily by hands-on-activities. It has already been demonstrated to be successful to teach the schools’ curriculum through hands-on lessons that are actually performed by the students in small groups. This group learning generates a symbiosis among the group members and gives rise to a vibrant atmosphere igniting joyful learning. The Activity Based Learning Enhancement Program (ABLEP), designed by Science Communicators’Forum (SCF), is to fulfill the guidelines mentioned in National Curricular Framework (NCF), 2005,read with The Right of Children to Free & Compulsory Education Act (RTEA), 2009 [Article 29(2)] and with expectation that students, will come up with an open and enquiring mind, strong reasoning, independence of thought and self-confidence to design, develop and fabricate simple model and apparatus for explaining various scientific issues, enhancing their understanding of science subjects. This program on innovative pedagogical methods of science learning through hands-on experiments/activities in upper primary level of the government aided schools of the State of West Bengal was conceived by SCF in January, 2011.

The Program inter-alia proposed setting up of 100 (one hundred) Science Activity Rooms (SARs) in 100 (one hundred) Front Runner Schools (FRSs), selecting 5 (five) FRSs from each of the 20 (twenty) educational districts of the State and to equip each SAR with low-cost-no-cost readily available materials to enable the students to practise an innovative pedagogical method of science learning in 80 (eighty-minute) class and to complete specific activity based worksheets, facilitated by their oriented subject teachers. The ABLEP in all the FRSs has been initiated on an experimental basis and as a Pilot Project. However, the State Sarva Shiksha Mission selected 255 (two hundred fifty five) FRSs in two Phases.

In course of time each FRS was to establish a School Cluster (SC) by involving four to five neighboring schools around each and to organize extra co-curricular activities to ensure joyful learning and to ignite the innovativeness in the mind of the students and the teachers. The exercise would develop a creative Resource Pool from amongst the teachers and would identify and nurture potential Science Learners of future, in addition.
